Dawn of the Games

Olympic medallist and life-long Patron of the Games, Dawn Fraser, shares a special connection to the Alice Springs Masters Games. In 1985, she visited the Red Centre to help find the perfect location for the event.

“We scouted Ayer's Rock (Uluru) to see if we could hold a marathon there. The community was supportive, but while we were there, it rained, and waterfalls were flowing off the Rock,” she recalled. They decided Alice Springs was more suitable due to its existing facilities. “Alice Springs was such a good place, so we thought, this is where we’ll start it.”

The Alice Springs Masters Games aimed to provide older athletes a chance to compete in friendly events. Dawn highlighted the camaraderie: “It sets a good example to the younger generation to keep playing sport throughout life, and you make lovely friends.”

This year, Dawn is especially excited about the equestrian competition. “It’s good to hear we have 35 contestants! I think the first year we started equestrian, we only had five.”

Dawn’s final wish is for everyone to enjoy the Games: “You get to meet new people and have a wonderful holiday!”

Small but Mighty

In 2008, a volleyball player has proved that all great things come in small packages. Standing at 152.5cm tall, the player was able to block another player who stood at nearly 183cm. Just another example of the heights the Games lifts its participants to.

Did you Know?

The inaugural event was called the Honda Central Australian Masters Games. In 2002, it was officially renamed the Alice Springs Masters Games.

Pistol Shooting

A huge congratulations to life-long Games member Bill Low for winning gold in the 25m Men’s Pistol Shooting. Well done, Bill!

Best of three with the Golf clubs

Stuart Chalmers had the best score of the day—43 points.

Craig Reid with a thrilling eagle, holing his second shot on the last hole of the day.

Diana Starke leading the women with an impressive 40 points.

Darts

Well done to Glen Oliver for hitting a score of 174, the highest in his game!

Badminton

Kudos to the B and C grade Alice Springs teams on winning Silver!

Victorian teams the renegades and Latrobe Shuttlers both won gold in their divisions, with the Renegades for winning all their matches!

A Toast to Our Birthday Athletes

Happy birthday to Adrian Gailey and Heather Rosier! Wishing you both another year of wisdom and joy.

Veteran Masters

This year we have three competitors that are 87 years young and they're still playing sport! How fantastic is that?

Keep an eye out for Ray in Tennis, David in Track & Field and Maggie in the Masters Mile and be sure to cheer them on!
